Don’t worry – you don’t need to sacrifice your firstborn in order to find true free foreclosure listings. Banks, insurance companies and even the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are required by law to make information about foreclosed property available to the public for free. All you need to do is find them and read them.

There are two ways to check for free foreclosure listings – by a specific location or nationally. If you have been into real estate speculation for a while, chances are you will prefer to get property in the markets that you know best. You know the streets in the counties with the best reputations and you know which areas that people are clamoring for. If you stick to a specific area, then you can check the pre-foreclosure notices in the county courthouses in order to get a jump on the competition.

But perhaps you are more interested in the available properties of an entire state or region. Trying to go through all of the foreclosure lists of all of the banks and courthouses in those areas, will drive you nuts, so you need to find consolidated listings. Check first with HUD, as they will have foreclosure listings buy state and city. Keep in mind that this will not be a comprehensive list, but there will still be a lot of tempting properties on offer.

There are many free comprehensive national foreclosure listings on the web, but how do you choose from them all? First, check to see how often the information is updated. Next, be sure they do not charge any money for “special services”. All these sites are doing is gathering information that banks, brokerages and HUD has made available for free in the first place. There’s no need to pay for what is already available for free.

Remember, nothing replaces your own eyeballs for determining how much a foreclosed property is worth to you. But using free listing services can certainly help push your eyeballs in the right direction.

By the way, by researching and comparing the different free foreclosure listing services in the market, you will be able to determine the one that meets your specific requirements, plus the free or cheaper options. This way you will save time through up to date foreclosure listings and money by getting better results over your investment.
